A Theory

I was driving west on Dodge past less than nothing. Prairies stripped of wildflowers to make room for corn and the fast food places that complete the viscous circle. Why would anyone stop here? What was going on in the heads of those pioneers? They had already made it past the Missouri River and there are no mountains in sight. Just smooth sailing in their earthbound Mayflowers.

Whatever it was it explains a lot about their descendants. No crowds. No need to push their luck. Willing to work hard. Content to settle.

Ah but San Franciscans. No stopping in the middle for them. Mountains, schmountians. They went all the way. All the way to the fucking ocean. They pushed the boundary as far as they could and they still do.
